Positives of gaming
Some Significant Pros of Videogames
Every once in a while video games will find their way into the mainstream media's attention. It often has to do with passing the blame for something onto video games and their explicit content. They are rarely portrayed in a positive light. I recently watched Some TED Talks on video games and entertainment. I found them to be very interesting and decided to look for some more information
If you play videogames often you probably have heard of Twitch. Twitch is an online live streaming app that lots of creators use to live stream themselves playing video games. Some such creators have amassed a large community of followers. These communities are very engaging. CEO and Cofounder of Twitch, Emmett Shear, explained in his TED Talk how this is starkly different from the stereotypical gamer that sits alone in their room gaming away having no social interactions.
Emmett Shear:Whats streaming means for the future of entertainment
In another TED Talk Gabe Zichermann explains that video games are good for children. He says all sorts of games have different positive effects on children. Grand Strategy games can help children practice thorough problem solving skills. First Person Shooters or FPS games can help children's reaction time.
I have played many hours of video games. Gabe Zichermann Mentions the Civilization franchise and its civilization games. It is still around today and I have played many hours of Civilization 6. The game has many mechanics that require your attention and management.
It is my opinion that videogames can be good social platforms that bring us together and make us smarter.

I liked you blog post, and the two pictures you added to give a visual of what you are talking about. How are these games improving reaction times? What reaction times are they improving clicking buttons or something?
ReplyDeleteI agree that vedio games dont often get alot of positive ligh shed on them, and I liked how you used all 3 ted talks to show that vedio games have positive effects on kids. Overall I enjoyed reading the article and agreed with your opinions. a question I had after reading it was, Why do you think video games usually considerd as bad for kids?
ReplyDeletePersonally I can only play games on my computer. But I typically play every night and I agree that it's really a great social activity, especially during this pandemic where in person social events are looked down on.
ReplyDeleteNice integration of the different Ted Talks You watched. I agree they can also have positive effects on people.
ReplyDeleteJohn, you do a nice job summarizing the TED Talks. Developing your ideas about the benefits of video games, using your own experiences, would have helped develop the post a bit more. Why do you see video games as beneficial?
